The Minister of Tourism and Sport, Rudolf Huliak, together with the President of the Slovak Olympic and Sports Committee, presented a joint project called Generation OLYMP, which was approved by the Government of the Slovak Republic at its meeting last week. The aim of the ambitious project is to fundamentally strengthen the sports infrastructure, support the development of talents in the regions and bring Slovakia back to the Olympic spotlight, especially in team sports.
"With my arrival at the ministry, I made a commitment to turn the direction of state policy in sports and especially the flows of funds that the ministry and the government of the Slovak Republic have at their disposal. Instead of the ministry contributing to some megalomaniacal concrete project of a private company once in a while, I set the promotion of sports in the regions and the development of sports for all as a priority. I want sports infrastructure to be built and reconstructed in small villages as well. I want sport to get as close as possible to children, seniors and people with disabilities. I want us not to miss talents, but to be able to capture young people and keep them active in their lives," said the Minister of Tourism and Sport of the Slovak Republic.
The project will affect all levels of sport – from school physical education and regional sports facilities, through talented youth, to national team selections. As part of it, Olympic training centers will be established in each of the self-governing regions at secondary sports schools, where the most talented athletes will be provided with professional conditions - training, accommodation, nutrition, health care and travel costs.
The project also includes support for team sports that have a real potential to qualify for the Olympic Games in the near future. In 2025, €1 million will be allocated for volleyball, handball, basketball, water polo and floorball, which could be included in the program of the Olympic Games in the near future.
"We have a unique opportunity to show that the Ministry of Tourism and Sports has its justification, importance and importance. I often hear criticism from people without offering a better alternative. We would like to prove that sport should be the space where politics takes a back seat and the level of responsibility increases. To unite and achieve something, not to say how it is not possible and not to criticize, but to show through sport that this country can progress. We want to change the conditions for the young generation so that they can live such a sports life as I still remember it," added the president of SOŠV Anton Siekel.
The Generation OLYMP project will also focus on the reconstruction and modernization of gyms in municipalities with up to 5,000 inhabitants. In cooperation with SOŠV, the recently announced call will be transformed into a new support mechanism within the national project, which will increase the volume of available funds by another million euros to 6 million euros.
Another priority is to support the participation of Slovak athletes in the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games in Milan/Cortina (Winter Olympics/Winter Olympics 2026) and Los Angeles (Summer Olympics/Summer Olympics 2028). €1.685 million will be released for winter sports and para sports, and €1.2 million for summer sports and para sports in 2025.
The Generation OLYMP project is both a challenge and a commitment that the ministry will support with €10,980,000. The ambition of both partners is to build a system that will provide young people in the regions with a safe space to move, quality sports conditions and the opportunity to grow up to the Olympic level. Slovak sport has potential – now is the time to fully develop it.
